From Place to Page: Illustrating the Spaces We Love

Places We Love is an adult illustration workshop inspired by the spaces that quietly shape our lives.

In this series, you’ll be invited to illustrate a place that holds meaning for you—your favourite café, a beloved bookstore, a garden, a bedroom, a cottage, a local street, or anywhere that feels like a place you love. Using a reference image you bring with you, we’ll translate that place into a painted illustration using drawing and gouache techniques.

This class grows directly out of my own art practice. Throughout the year, I’m creating a personal illustrated calendar of local places I love because they make me feel grounded, inspired, and connected. This workshop is an invitation to step into that same practice with me.

I’ll guide you step by step through my illustration process, sharing the tools, techniques, and creative decisions I use in my own work. You don’t need prior illustration experience, just a willingness to slow down, observe and respond to a place that matters to you.

By the end of the series, you’ll leave with a finished illustration and a deeper appreciation for how meaningful places can become powerful creative inspiration.

Along the way, I’ll share some of my favourite illustration techniques and creative approaches that make the process playful and freeing. Whether you’re an experienced artist or simply curious to try something new, these classes are designed to spark joy, build confidence, and let your inner illustrator shine.

Please bring a printed colour photo of your source to class. You will need to have the printed photo of your home for each class.

INVESTMENT: $445 + HST
STUDIO TIME: 11AM-1PM (2 hours)
AGES 18+

DATES:

Class 1: Thursday April 2, 2026. Drawing your composition on paper.

Class 2: Thursday April 9, 2026. Introduction to gouache. Blocking in the first layers.

Class 3: Thursday April 16, 2026. Painting Part 2, adding your specific colours.

Class 4: Thursday April 23, 2026. Adding depth with shadow ad light.

Class 5: Thursday April 30, 2026. Drawing with Prismacolors to add details and character.

Make-up class: Thursday May 7, 2026. Students who miss a class are welcome to come to this make-up class. Students who miss more than 1 class do so at their own loss.

Because everyone has a different feeling about inclement weather, If the roads are closed and we are experiencing a severe storm, class with be rescheduled. If the roads are open, class will remain as scheduled.

All class materials are provided.

If chilly weather is upon us, please bring slippers and a not precious sweater. THE STUDIO IS LOCATED IN AN OLD BUILDING.

REFUNDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AFTER THE 7 DAY BOOKING PERIOD. YOU ARE ABLE TO TRANSFER YOUR SPOT TO A FRIEND IF YOU CAN NO LONGER ATTEND THE COURSE. STUDENTS WHO MISS CLASS, DO SO AT THEIR OWN LOSS.
